Recent work of Cornish, Weeks, et al. involves experimental attempts to determine the topology of the universe, in particular to determine whether or not the universe is an open or closed 3-minifold. We will discuss some recent mathematical results which, given various conditions on the spacetime metric, place constraints on the possible topologies of a closed universe.
