Primary Objectives:

1) Help PSU students to develop diversity and multicultural competencies necessary to live a successful and productive life in the modern global village.
2) Develop a global awareness and respect for those of different cultures.
3) Foster a collaborative effort among students, faculty, administration, and staff in promoting multicultural understanding
4) Increase the awareness of students, faculty, administration and staff of current government, business, and industry diversity practices and policies.

History:

Pittsburg State University Tilford Group is an outgrowth of the Michael Tilford Conference on Diversity and Multiculturalism. Tilford Conference is named in honor of the late Dean of the Graduate School at Wichita State University and it is a statewide effort under the auspices of the Kansas Board of Regents. Pittsburg State University Tilford Group is modeled after the Kansas State University Tilford Group.

Pittsburg State University Tilford Group was officially formed and the first Chairperson and Assistant Chairperson were elected on April 27th, 2007. Group met monthly during the summer of 07 and planned the year 07-08 with a monthly lecture series and other activities.

Tilford Lecture Series:

(i) First lecture by Dr. Roy F. Janisch: "Native American Sovereignty and Law" in September 2007

(ii) Second Lecture by Dr. Jeffrey R. Williams : "Recruitment and Retention of Domestic Minorities" in October 2007

(iii) Third lecture by Dr. Joni Barnard : "Diversity in the Workplace" in November 2007

(iv) Fourth lecture by Dr. Anh Tran : "Stratagies to Promote Diversity Appreciation" on February 4, 2008 Picture

(v) Fifth Lecture by Dr. Browyn Conrad, Gender Discrimination in Academe Associate Professor of Social Sciences, PSU on March 25, 2008

Work in Progress

(a) Be the umbrella organization of all the diversity and multiculturalism activities on campus.

(b) Bring diversity and multiculturalism to the classroom and curriculum.

(c) The plan is to have BSA (Black Student Association) host the 1st Annual BSA Alumni Reunion. The goal is to unite current students with former students while also building a base for the long term objective of a Black Alumni Association.

(d) Attend freshman experience classes and give presentations.

(e) Participate in the Performance Agreement activities.

(f) Reading multicultural stories to community kids.

(g) Open up the "Food and Culture Fair" to other groups than international students.

(h) Plan the November 2008 (Diversity Month) activities.

(i) Partnership with Student Government to achieve diversity and multiculturalism goals.

Accomplishments during the short period

(a) Created a webpage

(b) Created a power point presentation about the group and presented to the Pittsburg Sunrise Rotary Club

(c) Prepared a one page flyer about the group to distribute among the Freshman Class of 2008.

(d) Updated the list of area churches, mosques, and temples. It will be on Office of Admissions website.


(e) Successful Lecture Series during fall 2007


(f) Twelve members attended the 2007 Tilford Conference at Wichita State University

(g) Planned a Black History Awareness Activities Program Black History Awareness Activities 2008

(h) "Diversity Teaching Ideas" Brown Bag Seminar on April 4, 2008

(i) Reaching to the Community Event: Multicultural Cinderella Reading at the Pittsburg Public Library, April 12, 2008.
